Roselle Man, 93 Years Old, Long Borough Resident
ROSELLE, Jan 5--John H. Doty, 93 years old, believed to be the last Civil War veteran in the Twin Boroughs, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Disabled Veterans Home, Menlo Park following a three days illness. He resided with his daughter, Mrs. E. C. Wright, 251 First avenue, east, but went to the home recently for medical treatment. If he had lived until January 18, he would have reached his ninety fourth year.
Born in Newark, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Doty, he removed to Union with his parents when a young boy. He joined the Union forces at Flemington when only 18 years old. He enlisted in Company B, Thirtieth New Jersey Volunteers, under Capt. James B. Van Der Veer and was honorably discharged from service June 27, 1863. He fought in several major engagements of the Civil War. He was an honorary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
After the war he went to work as a painter for the Central Railroad of New Jersey. In 1895 he lost his right leg when run down by an engine in the Jersey City yards while at work. Given a lifetime job, he served as gatetender at the Lorraine crossing here until 1923, when he retired with a pension.
Mr. Doty had resided here the past forty years. His wife, Charlotte F. Doty, died in 1923, just prior to his retirement from the railroad.
He made his last public appearance when he headed the Memorial Day parade here in 1934, riding with his grandson, Fire Chief George S. Wright. Upon the occasion of his ninetieth birthday anniversary he was honored with a reception at the home of his daughter and at that time received a telegram of felicitations from A. Harry Moore, then Governor.
Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Wright; two sons, S. C. Doty, of Hillside and E. H. Doty, of Cranford; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The body has been removed to the Funeral Home of J. C. Prall, 174 First avenue, east.
